TOKYO, May 31 (Reuters) – Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) said on Wednesday that information on customers in some countries in Oceania and Asia, excluding Japan, may have been left publicly accessible from October 2016 to May 2023.

May 31 (Reuters) – Lucid Group (LCID.O) said it plans to raise about $3 billion through a stock offering, nearly two-thirds of which will come from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), sending shares of the luxury electric-vehicle maker down 9% after market hours.

PIF, which owns more than 60% of the company, has agreed to buy 265.7 million shares in a private placement for about $1.8 billion, Lucid said, implying a price of about $6.80 per Lucid share, compared with the stock’s Wednesday close of $7.76.

WASHINGTON, May 31 (Reuters) – The Biden administration on Wednesday proposed requiring automatic emergency braking (AEB) on all new passenger cars and light trucks and set new performance requirements, one of the most significant safety regulations proposed in recent years.

The new requirements proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would require most vehicles to comply three years after being finalized and is expected to dramatically reduce crashes associated with pedestrians and rear-end crashes.

May 31 (Reuters) – The cost to make electric vehicles may not drop to the level for gas-powered cars until after 2030 when the process becomes simpler and less labor-intensive, Ford Motor Co (F.N) Chief Executive Jim Farley said on Wednesday.

At an investor conference, Farley said that, for many automakers, EVs will remain more costly than their internal combustion engine counterparts until the second and third generation models go into production later in this decade.

WASHINGTON, May 30 (Reuters) – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Tuesday it is closing its investigation into 580,000 Tesla (TSLA.O) vehicles over the automaker’s decision to initially allow games to be played on the front center touchscreen.

Shortly after NHTSA opened its investigation into Tesla’s “Passenger Play” in December 2021, Tesla agreed to stop allowing video games to be played on vehicle screens while its cars are moving. NHTSA said Tuesday it was not seeking a recall of the vehicles but said its analysis of data provided by Tesla “produced significant concerns about driver distraction during the time that it was available.”

BANGKOK, May 30 (Reuters) – China’s Great Wall Motor Co Ltd (601633.SS) is finalising plans to invest up to $30 million to set up a new battery pack assembly plant in Thailand, where it will start making a compact electric car next year, according to a company official.

The Hebei-based company is also considering establishing a research and development centre in Thailand that could work on battery powered pickup trucks, Narong Sritalayon, managing director of Great Wall Motor Thailand said in an interview.

OTTAWA, May 29 (Reuters) – Canada’s federal government and the Quebec province will each provide about C$150 million ($112 million) for a General Motors-POSCO Chemical (GM.N)(005490.KS) battery materials facility that is expected create about 200 jobs in the country, the Canadian industry ministry said on Monday.

DETROIT, May 29 (Reuters) – Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) and MediaTek Inc (2454.TW) on Monday said they will collaborate on technology to power advanced vehicle infotainment systems that can stream video or games or interact with drivers using artificial intelligence.

TOKYO, May 28 (Reuters) – Proxy adviser Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) has recommended that shareholders of Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) vote in favour of a resolution urging the automaker to improve disclosure of its lobbying related to climate change.

ISS in a report also regarded three of Toyota’s four outside director nominees as not independent. Toyota said all candidates met the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s independence criteria.

May 26 (Reuters) – Ford Motor Co (F.N) shares jumped by more than 7% on Friday after the No. 2 U.S. automaker announced a deal allowing its electric-vehicle owners to access rival Tesla Inc’s (TSLA.O) charging stations in North America.

Tesla’s Superchargers could become the standard for EV charging in the United States, Ford CEO Jim Farley told CNBC, but added: “With adapters and software, we really don’t have to make a choice right now what the standard is, but I think it’s going to play out in the free market.”

WASHINGTON, May 25 (Reuters) – A group of 27 Senate Republicans on Thursday called on the Biden administration to drop its plan to drastically cut vehicle emissions through 2032 and ramp up electric vehicle sales.

In a letter led by Senator Shelley Moore Capito, lawmakers said the administration plan will “effectively mandate a costly transition to electric cars and trucks in the absence of congressional direction.” The Environmental Protection Agency proposal issued in April estimates sharp emissions cuts would result in 67% of new light duty vehicle sales as electric by 2032.

May 25 (Reuters) – Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and its Audi unit have agreed to an $85 million settlement in principle over violations of Texas environmental laws stemming from its diesel cheating scandal, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said on Thursday.

The settlement stipulates that the German automakers pay a civil penalty of $85 million for their unlawful actions, Paxton said.

BERLIN, May 25 (Reuters) – German authorities have serious indications of possible data protection violations by Tesla (TSLA.O), Handelsblatt newspaper reported on Thursday, citing the data protection office in the state where the carmaker has its European gigafactory.

Handelsblatt’s report said the U.S. electric car manufacturer has failed to adequately protect data from customers, employees and business partners, citing 100 gigabytes of confidential data leaked to the newspaper by a whistleblower.
