SHANGHAI, March 21 (Reuters) – Tesla (TSLA.O) is poised to report one of its best quarters in China, the latest retail sales data showed, after becoming the first electric vehicle maker in the country to cut prices in a bid to defend its market share.

The U.S. EV maker’s retail sales in China totaled 106,915 units from Jan. 1 to March 19, or 1,371 units per day on average, according to data from China Merchants Bank International, which tracks car insurance registrations.

BERLIN, March 21 (Reuters) – Carmaker Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) must pay compensation for unauthorized so-called defeat devices in diesel cars if the buyer suffers damages, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled on Tuesday.

It is up to German courts to decide whether the software in question qualifies as a defeat device and whether its use is justified, the court said in a statement.

BENGALURU, March 21 (Reuters) – Indian automaker Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) said on Tuesday that it will raise prices of commercial vehicles by up to 5%, its second hike in four months, to ensure its vehicles comply with new emission norms.

The price increase, starting from April 1, will be applied across the entire range of commercial vehicles, with the hike varying according to the individual model and variant, the company said in an exchange filing.

PTI – The researchers have developed a low-cost process to produce ultrathin films of metal oxides from cheaper materials by using aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition technique to deposit nickel oxides thin film on silicon substrate, it said.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)Mandi have developed a cost-effective method for producing metal oxide layers for solar cells. The current process of developing nanometric thin films of metal oxides mainly nickel oxide-semiconductors used in advanced architecture silicon solar cells is expensive as the equipment required for production has to be imported and the precursors used for the development of the films, such as nickel acetylacetonate, are also expensive, a statement issued here on Monday said.

PTI – The Karnataka government on Monday approved 18 projects with a total investment of over INR 75,000 crore, including a proposal by tech giant Apple’s contract manufacturer Foxconn for INR 8,000 crore. Among the 18 projects that were approved by the State High-Level Clearance Committee under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, 10 are new, five are expansion projects, and three are additional projects with all the investment proposals expected to provide employment opportunities for 77,606 people.

WASHINGTON, March 20 (Reuters) – A group of 22 U.S. state attorneys general on Monday blasted Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) and Kia Corp (000270.KS) and said they need do more to address problems with millions of U.S. vehicles that are prone to theft.

Last month, the Korean automakers said they would offer software upgrades to 8.3 million U.S. vehicles to help curb increasing car thefts using a method popularized on TikTok and other social media channels.

March 20 (Reuters) – South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster on Monday signed legislation approving $1.29 billion in state incentives for Volkswagen’s (VOWG_p.DE) off-road brand Scout Motors to build a $2 billion manufacturing plant for trucks and SUVs.

The project could also receive up to $180 million in job development tax credits based on hiring, said South Carolina Commerce Secretary Harry Lightsey.

BERLIN, March 20 (Reuters) – Talks between Germany’s Transport Ministry and the European Commission about the planned end of new combustion engines from 2035 are moving forward, the ministry said on Monday, but added it could not say when agreement would be reached.

After months of negotiations, the European Parliament, the Commission and EU member states agreed last year to the law that would require new cars sold in the European Union from 2035 to have zero CO2 emissions – effectively making it impossible to sell combustion engine cars from that date.

PRAGUE, March 19 (Reuters) – Czech carmaker Skoda would have to cut 3,000 jobs and axe some models if the European Union’s “Euro 7” emissions scheme is implemented in its current form, a Skoda board member warned in a TV debate on Sunday.

March 16 (Reuters) – Finland’s Nokian Tyres (TYRES.HE) said on Thursday Russian energy and petrochemical company PJSC Tatneft (TATN.MM) had paid it 285 million euros ($302.30 million) for its operations in Russia.

PTI – India’s largest gas utility GAIL on Friday said it has signed an agreement with Shell Energy India Pvt Ltd to explore ethane sourcing and other opportunities along the energy value chain. GAIL is planning to import ethane from the US to replace natural gas and naphtha as feedstock at petrochemical plants. In a statement, GAIL said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Shell Energy India to “explore opportunities for infrastructure development for ethane sourcing.”

March 16 (Reuters) – Russia’s top carmaker Avtovaz (AVAZI_p.MM) said on Thursday it plans to sell at least 370,000 vehicles this year, the TASS news agency reported – almost double last year’s sales volumes.

The company sold 188,645 cars in 2022 as Russia’s auto industry was hit hard by the fallout of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and imposition of Western sanctions.
