Norway wealth fund pushes Tesla for union recognition, will keep its stake

OSLO, Dec 9 (Reuters) – U.S. automaker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) should respect fundamental labour rights including collective bargaining, Norway’s $1.5 trillion sovereign wealth fund said, while adding it would keep its stake in the company and seek to influence policy over time.

The electric vehicle producer faces a backlash in the Nordic region from unions and some pension funds over its refusal to accept a demand from Swedish mechanics for collective bargaining rights covering wages and other conditions.

National highway projects totalling 43,856 kilometres are under construction stage in the country, Parliament was informed on Thursday. These national highways are being constructed at a cost of over INR 9,60,103 crore, Minister for Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said in the Lok Sabha.

According to the data shared by the minister, as of October 31, the total length of national highways in the country is about 1,46,145 km against 91,287 km as of March 31, 2014.

Electric vehicle total retail sales, including passenger and commercial vehicles vehicles, grew 25.5 per cent to 1,52,606 units in November, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) on Thursday.

The e-two-wheeler sales were 18.82 per cent higher at 91,243 units during the previous month from 76,791 units in November 2022.

Mumbai: Electric vehicle maker Olectra Greentech on Thursday said it has received an order from Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation, Mumbai, for the supply and maintenance of 40 e-buses at a value of INR 62.80 crore. This bus order, valued at INR 62.80 cr, is on an outright sale basis, Olectra Greentech said in a regulatory filing.

“…Olectra Greentech Limited LOA (letter of award) from Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation, Mumbai for supply and maintenance of 40 electric buses,” the company said in a regulatory filing.

Dec 8 (Reuters) – A labour dispute between Tesla (TSLA.O) and Swedish trade union IF Metall has drawn in a host of unions across the Nordic region, all urging the automaker to sign a collective bargaining agreement.

About 130 workers affiliated with IF Metall began a strike on Oct. 27, sparking sympathy strikes – a solidarity tactic by unaffected workers – from dockworkers, cleaners and car dealerships.

BEIJING/SHANGHAI, Dec 8 (Reuters) – China’s passenger vehicle sales rose 25.5% in November from a year earlier, faster than the prior month and extending growth to a fourth month, industry data showed on Friday, as automakers stepped up a price battle to meet sales goals.

Car sales totalled 2.1 million units last month, data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed, while growth accelerated from October’s 9.9% jump.

LONDON/DETROIT, Dec 8 (Reuters) – The rise of inexpensive Chinese electric vehicles has upped the pressure on legacy automakers who have turned to suppliers, from battery materials makers to chipmakers, to squeeze out costs and develop affordable EVs quicker than previously planned.

“Automakers are really now only turning to affordable vehicles, knowing they’ve got to or they will lose out to Chinese manufacturers,” said Andy Palmer, chairman of UK startup Brill Power, which has developed hardware and software to boost EV battery management system performance.

WASHINGTON, Dec 7 (Reuters) – The U.S. Transportation Department needs to support the development of autonomous vehicles, a coalition of groups representing the industry warned on Thursday, saying the nascent industry risks losing out to competitors like China.

“The AV industry is at a critical juncture and in need of strong leadership from USDOT,” the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Alliance for Automotive Innovation and others said in a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

The automaker, which employs 4,600 at the plant that builds versions of the Grand Cherokee SUV, said it will drop to two shifts from three shifts at its Detroit Assembly Mack plant and reduce production by an unspecified amount.

The plans will make investors in the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) supply chain ineligible for tax credits should they use more than a trace amount of critical materials from China, or other countries deemed a “Foreign Entity of Concern” (FEOC).

Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc across Chennai and its neighbouring districts, inundating the city, causing disruptions in flights and trains, and startling residents with a video capturing a crocodile crossing a submerged road.

Sources said that several factories in and around Chennai have temporarily suspended operations.

New Delhi: With the 5 million metric tonnes installed capacity under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, India can reduce imports of fossil fuel worth INR 1 lakh crore by 2030, Union Minister Singh said on Tuesday. In January 2023, the Union Cabinet approved the National Mission with an outlay of INR 19,744 crore with an aim to make India a global hub for manufacturing this clean source of energy. 

Green hydrogen has the potential to replace fossil fuels including natural gas, either as a source of energy or as a feedstock, thereby contributing to reduction in dependence on import of fossil fuels, the Minister for New and Renewable Energy informed the Rajya Sabha.

The issue of ill effect of lithium-ion battery waste dumping and on workers in manufacturing units of this storage system was raised by Congress member Ranjeet Ranjan during the question hour in the Rajya Sabha.

In a supplementary question, Ranjan stated that there is a research report which highlights the ill effect on the health of workers involved in the process of manufacturing lithium-ion batteries.

Dec 6 (Reuters) – Ford Motor (F.N) said on Wednesday it is unlikely Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles currently in dealer showrooms will qualify for federal tax credits beginning in January.

The U.S. Treasury issued guidance last week detailing new battery sourcing restrictions that take effect Jan. 1 aimed at weaning the U.S. EV supply chain away from China. The current model Mach-E currently qualifies for a $3,750 federal tax credit.

In October, state-owned JAC put up for sale the assets at the two plants, known as F1 and F2, where Nio has been producing its electric vehicles (EVs). Nio said in an exchange filing on Tuesday that it would take some fixed assets and equipment at the two factories from JAC at a price of 3.16 billion yuan ($442.19 million).

Dec 4 (Reuters) – Ford Motor (F.N) posted a 0.5% drop in U.S. new vehicle sales for November on Monday, as the automaker worked to restart some of its key plants following a lengthy workers’ strike that impacted vehicle production.
