Schumer proposes $462 billion car swap – gas for electric

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is moving Democrats’ climate talk to where the rubber meets the road, proposing a $462 billion trade-in program to get millions of Americans out of climate-damaging gas vehicles and into electric or hybrid cars over the next decade.

Schumer’s rebate proposal late Thursday joins a mix of trillion- and multitrillion-dollar programs that Democratic presidential candidates have outlined to urgently cut oil, gas and coal emissions, as climate change weighs as an issue in the 2020 campaigns. Read Full Story.

Renault chairman vows to get Nissan alliance back on track next year

The Renault-Nissan partnership was rocked by former alliance boss Carlos Ghosn’s arrest in Tokyo almost a year ago on financial misconduct charges, which he denies.

The two firms are still trying to repair relations, including through recent management overhauls, to focus again on combined efforts to cut costs and invest in new technologies – among the pressing issues thrown into sharp relief by a Renault profit warning last week. Read Full Story

Ford cuts full-year profit outlook as third-quarter profit dips

Ford Motor Co this week cut its forecast for operating profit for the year after a disappointing third quarter that Chief Executive Jim Hackett blamed on higher warranty costs, bigger discounts and weaker than expected performance in China.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker still faces the prospect of negotiating a new four-year labor agreement with the United Auto Workers following the union’s more than month-long strike against General Motors Co, which cost GM about $2 billion according to analysts. Read Full Story

To go big on EVs, Japanese car makers think super-small

They are betting such EVs are best-placed for Japan’s narrow streets, cramped parking spaces and rapidly ageing society, and that the vehicles will eventually catch on globally too as the elderly population grows. But the jury is still out on whether these vehicles will work overseas.

Fiat Chrysler faces $79 million U.S. penalty for fuel economy shortfall

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles faces a $79 million U.S. civil penalty for failing to meet 2017 fuel economy requirements, the automaker confirmed Wednesday.

FCA  automaker paid $77.3 million last year for a 2016 model year fuel-economy shortfall and a company spokesman confirmed Wednesday the company has received a letter on the 2017 penalty and has 60 days to respond. Read Full Story

Citroen to get former Mitusbishi exec Cobee as new CEO, sources say

PSA Group’s Citroen brand plans to reshuffle its leadership, with Mitsubishi’s former head of production, Vincent Cobee, replacing the brand’s current boss Linda Jackson, company sources said.

Cobee left Mitsubishi in April as part of a wider shuffle among the top ranks at Nissan and Mitsubishi in the wake of the arrest of Carlos Ghosn last November. Read Full Story

Arm joins with GM, Toyota to find common ground on car chips

Arm Holdings, the British chip technology firm owned by Japan’s Softbank Group Corp, is joining with automakers General Motors Co and Toyota Motor Corp to establish common computing systems for self-driving cars, an effort the companies hope will speed development of the technology.

The group’s first task will be to establish a common computing architecture. That effort aims to make it easier for car companies to write software that will work on chips from different vendors, similar to how Microsoft Corp Windows-based software works on processors from Intel Corp or Advanced Micro Devices Inc.. Nissan appoints Makoto Uchida as new CEO, Ashwani Gupta as COO

The new appointments come as part of a major restructuring to the brand’s top management in the wake of recent scandals.

The company’s board of directors appointed Makoto Uchida, current Nissan senior vice-president and president of the Dongfeng Motor Corporation, as representative executive officer and chief executive officer of Nissan.

Additionally, the board appointed current Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s COO, Ashwani Gupta, the position of representative executive officer and chief operating officer of Nissan.

Jun Seki, Nissan’s senior vice-president, has been appointed vice-COO and will report to Gupta.

VW increases stockpiles of cars in Britain ahead of Brexit

Volkswagen Group has increased stockpiles of cars in Britain as politicians struggle to agree on the terms of the country’s departure from the European Union ahead of an Oct. 31 deadline.

The potential for a disorderly “no-deal” Brexit and concerns about future trading relations, are forcing companies to take measures to mitigate the impact of potential tariffs.

VW was the UK’s second best-selling brand in the first nine months with sales of 157,040, down 0.5 percent, behind Ford at No. 1 with 188,124 sales, down 9 percent, according to industry association SMMT. Total UK new-car registrations were down 2.5 percent to 1.86 million during the period. Read Full Story

New Thyssenkrupp CEO prepares ground for major job cuts

Thyssenkrupp previously said it would cut 6,000 of the group’s 162,000 jobs, a step seen by sources familiar with the matter as insufficient to improve the group’s cost structure. Deutsche Bank for example, has announced 18,000 cuts, out of a total of 92,000 jobs.

New Thyssenkrupp chief executive Martina Merz recently paved the way for deeper job cuts at the ailing conglomerate, telling employees in an internal memo such a step was necessary for a much-needed turnaround.Read Full Story

Team India Finalised For International BMW GS Trophy 2020

Since 2018, BMW Motorrad India been hosting an annual two-day event in Goa for owners GS range of motorcycles.

The event acts as a qualifier for BMW’s prestigious GS Trophy where the competition as well as the event is as tough as its GS range of off-road motorcycles.

Nissan CEO candidates interviewed by Renault chairman, report says

Nissan has narrowed candidates for its CEO to three Renault-Nissan veterans.

Renault chairman Jean-Dominique Senard spoke with the candidates in person in Paris or via TV conference, the people said.

Two of the candidates are Japanese company veterans — Nissan’s acting CEO Yasuhiro Yamauchi and former Nissan China chief Jun Seki.

They are seen as the frontrunners. But Nissan’s board and Renault have kept up dialogue with Indian-born Ashwani Gupta, who joined Renault in 2006 in India as a purchasing manager, and was sent this year to Mitsubishi Motors Corp as chief operating officer. Read Full Story

 

Tesla aims to start China production this month, report says

Tesla’s China factory aims to start production this month but it is unclear when it will meet year-end production targets due to uncertainties around orders, labor and suppliers, sources with knowledge of the matter said.

The U.S. electric vehicle maker aims to produce at least 1,000 Model 3s a week from the new factory by the end of this year, the centerpiece of its ambitions to boost sales in the world’s biggest auto market and avoid higher import tariffs imposed on U.S. cars. Read Full Story

Bentley, the British ultraluxury brand that turned 100 this year, has a slew of products to commemorate the milestone.

Australian car sales slump again in September as banks tighten lending

New car sales in Australia fell for the 18th consecutive month in September, suggesting back-to-back interest rate cuts in June and July had failed to lift consumer spending as banks contain their lending.

Data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) on Thursday showed total sales for September skidded nearly 7% to 88,181 vehicles from a year earlier. For January-September were down about 8% from the same period in 2018.
