Source : PTI | In a move aimed at increasing non-fare revenue, the Delhi government has approved full-body wrap advertisements on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses, officials said on Wednesday.
Till now only left side and rear side advertisements were allowed on DTC buses.
In a recent meeting of the State Transport Authority (STA), the right side advertisement was also approved.
“Following the approvals, we are offering 948 electric buses across eight bus depots in the first phase for full body wrap advertisements barring the front and windows,” an official said.
Currently DTC operates more than 7,000 buses across the city. While left side and rear advertising was allowed, right side advertisements were prohibited due to road safety concerns.
DTC could not generate much revenue from advertising in the past few years due to lack of interest from the companies, the official said.
“A special committee constituted last year by the STA to look into the issues related to advertisements on DTC buses has submitted its report. Based on the recommendations, the project has been approved and a tender has been floated to invite a private agency to carry out the work,” he added.
As per the advertising committee’s report, body wrap advertisements would be helpful in revenue generation.
“It was agreed that allowing advertisements on the body of the public transport buses plying in Delhi will certainly result in generating more revenue for the government and services may be further improved using this additionally generated revenue,” the report said.
Noting that Rule 71 (2) of the Delhi Motor Vehicle Rules 1993 does not allow advertising on public service vehicles as “it may cause distraction to the other motorists”, the report suggested that STA can give specific directions to generate more revenue by advertisements on the buses.
According to the plan, the left and right sides exclude windows, panel over window and below roof areas where advertisements will not be allowed.
