Closely watching West Asia situation for possible impact on two-wheeler demand: Suzuki Motorcycle India official

Source : PTI | Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd is closely watching situation in West Asia for its possible impact on sales, having witnessed good sales growth in the last fiscal, a senior company offical said on Tuesday.

The company, which launched its all-new Burgman Street scooter with prices starting at ₹1.01 lakh, has also increased prices on some select models to offset the impact of rising commodity prices, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) Vice President- Sales & Marketing, Deepak Mutreja, told PTI.

“This West Asia crisis, definitely, no one is insulated,” he said, when asked about the impact of the US-Israel war against Iran.

Citing the LPG shortage crisis, which has erupted in the last few weeks, he said, “Definitely, we are getting the indicators in terms of inflation going high.” Mutreja pointed out that with two-wheelers, affordability comes first, and any increase in cost could dampen demand, citing historical data.

“The moment inflation happens, if you see the history, the footfalls fall, definitely. Right now, we have a situation, definitely. We were expecting momentum to continue, but closely watching, honestly, I can’t commit any number right now,” he said, when asked about the growing outlook.

In 2025-26, SMIPL clocked its highest-ever annual sales of 14,39,415 units, a growth of 15 per cent over 12,56,155 units sold in FY 2024-25.

Mutreja said market sentiments post the government tax rationalisation last year were very positive.

Rural demand had also started coming after a long time, he said, adding that under the current situation, it was difficult to forecast growth figures.

When asked about the impact of the commodity price rise, he said that in order to partially offset it, the company has increased vehicle prices on select models.

“In the last quarter, we have increased (prices) on select models… and with the kind of pressures, or with the kind of challenge coming on (further price hike) looks like certainty on some models, on a case-by-case basis,” Mutreja said.

On the new model launch, SMIPL Managing Director Kenichi Umeda said over the years Burgman Street has received encouraging response with sales doubling over the past three years, and the company is confident of continuing the performance with the new offering.
