Source : PTI | The Meghalaya Cabinet on Monday approved the Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, 2026, offering a ₹25,000 incentive and full registration fee waiver to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles across the state, a minister said.
The cabinet also cleared a series of measures to strengthen the power sector, including the appointment of a Chief Technical Advisor for power generation and sanctioning ₹22.37 crore towards land compensation for a key transmission line project.
Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, senior minister Marcus Marak said the new EV policy aims to accelerate the transition to clean mobility by providing a ₹25,000 incentive to every buyer of an electric vehicle and waiving registration fees for all such cars.
He said the state already has over 5,000 electric vehicles on its roads and expressed confidence that the policy would significantly increase their numbers.
Similar types of incentives will also apply to two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
Marak said the government does not foresee any major hurdles in setting up charging stations, adding that suitable locations for commercial charging stations have already been identified.
The Cabinet also reviewed the Vehicle Scrappage Policy, notified last year, under which owners scrapping vehicles older than 15 years can use the scrappage certificate to purchase a new EV and avail themselves of the incentives.
In another decision, the Cabinet approved the appointment of retired Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) Chief Engineer (Civil) BM War as Chief Technical Advisor (Generation) to the Power Department to support the state’s power generation initiatives.
The Cabinet also sanctioned ₹22.37 crore towards land compensation for the construction of a 6.5-km, 132 KV transmission line connecting the proposed 220/132 KV Secondary Substation with the proposed 132/33 KV, Mawkhanu Substation. The approval also covers compensation for the Right of Way (RoW), paving the way for the timely implementation of the project.
