Taranjit Singh Sandhu is an Indian diplomat-turned-administrator and politician, known for his extensive contributions to India’s foreign policy and international relations. He is a retired Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and has held several key diplomatic assignments globally.
Taranjit Singh Sandhu served as the 28th Ambassador of India to the United States from 2020 to 2024, where he played a crucial role in strengthening India–US strategic, defense, and economic ties. His tenure was marked by high-level diplomatic engagement and deepening bilateral cooperation during a critical global phase.
He also served as High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka from 2017 to 2020 and held multiple assignments in Washington D.C. and at the United Nations, reflecting his deep expertise in global diplomacy and U.S. affairs.
In March 2026, he was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, marking a transition from diplomacy to governance and public administration. His leadership is expected to leverage decades of international experience in managing complex policy and governance challenges.
An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru University, he holds a strong academic background in history and international relations.
He is married to Reenat Sandhu, a former Indian ambassador, and they have two children.
