Two Wheeler retails in May 2021 fell by almost 110% when compared to April 2021. The second wave of COVID-19 across India has been detrimental for the two-wheeler industry. While the two-wheeler market was among the first segments to grow in a post-COVID revival last year, the decline in sales this year is even more worrisome as the rural markets have been impacted as well.

The world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp volumes declined by 55 percent in May 2021 vs last month and recorded sales of 1,92,968 units. The volumes will recover much better in June 2021 as the company has started production at its manufacturing facilities across India (six manufacturing units located at Dharuhera and Gurugram in Haryana, Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, Haridwar in Uttarakhand, Neemrana in Rajasthan and Halol in Gujarat), its Global Parts Center (GPC) in Neemrana and the R&D facility in Jaipur.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India’s May 2021 sales fell to 78,343 units compared to the April 2021 sales of 2,17,832 units. Similar to Hero Motocorp, HMSI’s production at four plants – Manesar (Haryana), Tapukara (Rajasthan), Narsapura (Karnataka), and Vithalapur (Gujarat) – have started in June, and the company will use this period to catch up on the lost volumes.

TVS Motor Company registered sales of 57,562 units in May 2021 and was down 122 percent from 1,28,365 units in April 2021.

Bajaj Auto recorded dispatches of 45,550 units in May 2021 and the volumes dropped by 115 percent from 98,041 units in April 2021. The OEM shall aggressively seek volumes from the Export markets until the domestic demand improves. However; the production capacity shall surely be increased for domestic and exports.

Suzuki Motorcycle India was one of the few mass-market Two Wheeler OEMs to record a Month-on-Month loss of over 255% and 9,468 units were sold in the domestic market for May 2021.

Royal Enfield sold around 14,942 units in May 2021, down 181 percent from Apri 2021 volumes of 42,120 units.

Yamaha India recorded dispatches of 9,182units in May 2021 and the volumes dipped from 34,817 units in April 2021.
