Around 2,55,937 passenger cars were sold in the Indian market for June 2021. The sales shot up by a mammoth 118 percent YoY and 147 percent MoM. This was primarily due to the ease of lockdown in several parts of the country and the pent-up demand created by the previous lockdown months.
OEM-wise Sales Snapshot for June 2021 –

Maruti Suzuki recorded the highest gain in Market Share and increased a whopping 16.8 percent share in June’21 v/s May’21. Maruti’s domestic volumes shot over 277 percent in June 2021 when compared to May 2021.

Hyundai India sales increased 89 percent Y-o-Y and 62 percent M-o-M. Due to Maruti’s resurgence, Hyundai’s Market Share dropped to 15.9 percent in June 2021 against 24.2 percent in May 2021.

Tata continues to perform well (source) and its volumes more than doubled in June 2021 v/s June 2020. The Indian OEM is now averaging around 25k units volumes and plans to jump to 30k figures with the launch of the HBX mini SUV. Tata has been able to stabilize at the No.3 position and is now maintaining a significant lead over Mahindra/Kia.

Mahindra regained the fourth rank and sales increased over 109 percent YoY and 114 percent MoM.

Kia India volumes grew just 36 percent in June 2021 over May 2021 and was pushed to the fifth spot in the ranking table. The Korean automaker also recorded a fall of 4.8 percent market share in June’21 over May’21.

Toyota overtook the likes of Renault, Ford and Honda to place itself in the sixth spot and was primarily helped by the Maruti sourced models. Glanza & Urban Cruiser contributed to over 58% of Toyota India’s volumes in June 2021.

Renault sold 6,100 units of its cars in June 2021 compared to 4,634 units in the same period last year. The majority of sales for Renault come from Kwid, Triber, and Kiger.

Ford fell behind Renault India with sales of 4,936 units in June 2021. It also recorded a Market Share of 1.9 percent in June 2021.

Honda could manage sales of just 4,767 units in June 2021. The Japanese OEM is planning to launch the facelift of Amaze soon and may get the required boost in sales. The New City has also been supporting well to the OEM and contributed near to 54 percent of the OEM’s sales in June 2021.

MG sold 3,558 units in June 2021 compared to 2,012 units in June 2020. MG is now gearing up for the launch of its Creta-rivalling Mid-SUV, Astor soon.

Magnite has proved to be a success in the Indian market and has helped Nissan gain some traction. Nissan sold 3,503 units in June 2021, compared to a dismal 576 units in June 2020.

VW, FCA & Skoda ranked 12th, 13th and 14th respectively. With the upcoming Kushaq, Skoda is all set to jump in the ranking table and also leverage on the Mid SUV.

Citroen started its India journey with dispatches of 230 C5 Aircross in April 2021. Unfortunately, the dispatches dropped to meager 40 units in May 2021 and just 41 units in June 2021. Wrong timing?
