November 2021 Car Sales – Snapshot

Around 2,45,262 passenger cars were sold in the Indian market for November 2021. The sales dropped by 14.3 percent YoY. The shortage of semiconductors crippled the entire supply chain during the festive season and the drop in dispatches has hit both the OEMs and PV dealers hard. The industry recorded its worst festive season in the last decade due to the supply crunch.

India’s biggest OEM Maruti Suzuki stated, “The shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles during the month. The shortage primarily affected the production of vehicles sold in the domestic market. The company took all possible measures to minimize the impact.”

December is usually a high volume (retail) month as the majority of the OEMs would be providing year-end discounts on their offerings to liquidate the stock before the year change. However with low stocks at the dealer channel, we anticipate the discount levels to be on a lower level.
  • Maruti Suzuki recorded the highest drop in Market Share YoY and the volumes fell by 19.2 percent in Nov’21 v/s Nov’20. Maruti has lost significant Market share this year and should be a matter of concern for the OEM.

  • Hyundai India sales dropped by 24.2 percent YoY and lost considerable Market Share too.

  • Tata continues to perform well (source) and has been able to stabilize at the No.3 position. It gained the highest Market Share in Nov’21 over last year and has seen great traction for all its models. The launch of Punch has given the much-required push for the Indian auto manufacturer.

  • M&M volumes increased by 8 percent in Nov 2021 over Nov 2020 and was placed at the fourth spot in the ranking table. The Indian automaker had a very successful launch of the XUV700 and over 16 percent of Mahindra’s volumes came from the new model.

  • Kia was pushed to the fifth rank and sales dropped over 32 percent YoY. Kia India also lost over 1.5 percent Market Share!

  • Toyota maintained its lead over the likes of Renault and Honda to place itself in the sixth spot. It was just 1.2k units lower than Kia!

  • Renault sold 5,052 units of its cars in Nov 2021 compared to 10,181 units in the same period last year. The majority of sales for Renault come from Kwid, Triber, and Kiger.

  • Honda could manage 5,457 units in November 2021. City remained the best-selling Honda for November 2021.

  • MG sold 2,481 units in November 2021 compared to 4,162 units in Nov 2020. Even Astor couldn’t help MG improve volumes as the semiconductor shortage impacted production negatively.

  • Škoda India recorded 2,196 units dispatches! The New Kushaq has fallen below 2k units and is a matter of concern!

  • Nissan sold 2,651 units in Nov 2021, compared to a dismal 1,017 units in Nov 2020, and helped the OEM record YoY growth of 160 percent last month.
