Wang Chuanfu is a renowned Chinese entrepreneur, engineer, and technology leader, best known as the Founder, Chairman and CEO of BYD Company Limited. He has played a defining role in the development of battery technology, electric vehicles, new energy, and advanced manufacturing, transforming BYD from a battery manufacturer into a globally recognized technology and automotive company.
Born in February 1966 in Wuwei, Anhui Province, China, Wang Chuanfu studied metallurgical physical chemistry at the Central South University of Technology, graduating in 1987, and later earned a Master of Engineering from the Beijing Nonferrous Metals Research Institute in 1990. His technical background became the foundation for his career in battery technology and innovation.
Before founding BYD, Wang Chuanfu worked at the Beijing General Research Institute of Nonferrous Metals and later became General Manager of a battery company in Shenzhen. In February 1995, he founded BYD, initially focusing on rechargeable batteries before expanding into electronics and eventually the automotive industry.
BYD entered the automotive sector in 2003, marking a major turning point in the company’s growth. Under Wang Chuanfu’s leadership, BYD developed expertise across electric vehicles, batteries, electric powertrains, electronics, renewable energy, and new-energy technologies. His strong focus on research and development has been central to BYD’s growth in the global electric mobility market.
Wang Chuanfu has received international recognition for his contributions to technology, entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and new-energy mobility. He was selected as a founding member of the Sustainable Development Advisory Committee of the United Nations Development Programme and has received honours including the CCTV Economic Person of the Year and the Individual Lifetime Achievement Award of the Zayed Future Energy Prize.
