Amazon to deploy 1 lakh e-delivery vans across global operations by 2030, expand India fleet

Source : PTI | American e-commerce giant Amazon on Thursday said it plans to double to one lakh its electric delivery van fleet across global operations, including India, by the end of 2030.

Amazon, which started rolling out its electric delivery vans in the summer of 2022, has deployed more than 50,000 electric delivery vans globally by the end of 2025.

Besides, Amazon plans to introduce over 1,000 electric light and medium-duty trucks into its operations in India over the next five years, joining the more than 10,000 electric vehicles already on the road, Amazon said.

The company also said it has put more than 15 models of electric vehicles on the road, including e-cargo bikes, e-mopeds, and three-wheelers, to test and learn across the US, the European Union, and India.

The move is aimed at delivering packages to customers from Amazon fulfilment centres more sustainably.

Over 80 per cent of Amazon deliveries in India are made via two-wheelers, which offer advantages such as superior manoeuvrability in congested streets, cost-effectiveness, easy parking, and faster navigation in urban areas compared to larger vehicles.

Amazon co-founded the Climate Pledge in 2019 and made a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040. As part of that pledge, the company also announced a partnership with Rivian—ordering 100,000 electric delivery vans—and got to work on designing a new state-of-the-art delivery vehicle.

“In three short years, a simple sketch turned into the custom electric delivery vehicles on the road today. With its commitment to have at least 100,000 electric delivery vans on the road globally by 2030, Amazon will eliminate millions of metric tons of carbon per year,” it said.
