GM expands Chevy Bolt EV recall for fire risk, will take $1 billion hit

WASHINGTON, Aug 21 (Reuters) – General Motors Co (GM.N) said on Friday it would take a hit of $1 billion to expand the recall of its Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles due to the risk of fires from the high-voltage battery pack – a blow for the largest U.S. automaker as it seeks to ramp up EV sales.

GM workers in Mexico defeat union in first test of U.S. trade deal

MEXICO CITY, Aug 19 (Reuters) – Workers at a General Motors Co (GM.N) pickup-truck plant in central Mexico have voted to scrap their collective contract, opening the door for them to oust one of Mexico’s largest labor organizations as their union under a new trade deal.

The vote, with safeguards agreed upon by Mexico and the United States to ensure a fair vote, was the first test of labor rules under an accord that replaced the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The outcome marks a defeat for one of the most powerful unions in Mexico while representing an opening for workers to freely choose independent groups they feel will best fight for their interests.

The White House is prepared to offer a third booster shot starting on that date to all Americans who completed their initial inoculation at least eight months ago, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.

The booster shots initially will be given primarily to healthcare workers, nursing home residents and older people, all of whom were among the first groups to be vaccinated in late 2020 and early 2021, the department said.

U.S. opens probe into Tesla’s Autopilot over emergency vehicle crashes

U.S. opens probe into Tesla’s Autopilot over emergency vehicle crashes

WASHINGTON, Aug 16 (Reuters) – U.S. auto safety regulators said Monday they had opened a formal safety probe into Tesla Inc’s (TSLA.O) driver assistance system Autopilot in 765,000 U.S. vehicles built since 2014 after a series of crashes involving emergency vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that since January 2018 it had identified 11 crashes in which Tesla models “have encountered first responder scenes and subsequently struck one or more vehicles involved with those scenes.”

Tesla shares fell 5% on the news.

After investigating, NHTSA could opt to take no action, or it could demand a recall, which might effectively impose limits on how, when and where Autopilot operates. Any restrictions could narrow the competitive gap between Tesla’s system and similar advanced driver assistance systems offered by established automakers.

Detroit sticks with trucks, SUVs despite lofty 2030 goals for EVs

DETROIT, Aug 16 (Reuters) – The future may belong to electric cars, but for U.S. automakers, trucks will rule for years to come.

Automakers in North America plan to build more big pickups and sport utility vehicles than electric vehicles well into the late 2020s, chasing sales trends that run counter to the Biden administration’s goal of boosting EVs to half the market by 2030, according to internal production forecasts viewed by Reuters.

The popularity of Detroit’s big trucks is a challenge both to the industry and efforts by lawmakers and regulators to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other exhaust gas pollutants from combustion engines.

Ford counterattacks in ‘cruise’ dispute with GM

DETROIT, Aug 13 (Reuters) – Ford Motor Co (F.N) said late on Friday it will ask the U.S. Patent Office to rescind trademarks obtained by rival General Motors Co (GM.N) for the terms “Cruise” and “Super Cruise,” escalating a brawl GM began by suing Ford over its use of “Blue Cruise” for an automated driving system.

The legal fight between the two Detroit automakers turns on whether “cruise” is a generic term for technology that allows the car to take over some share of driving tasks from a human motorist.

The clash underscores the intensity of competition among established automakers to be seen as leaders in automated driving technology, competitive with Silicon Valley rivals Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), Alphabet Inc(GOOGL.O) ‘s Waymo unit and others.

Use of AIs in the Automobile Industry

Use of AIs in the Automobile Industry

S.S Rana & Co.  8 min read

Artificial intelligence has been consistently transforming various industries across the world. However, the Automobile Industry is one, which has arguably seen the most developments in its processes and practice, due to development in AI. AI, for quite some time now, is being applied in different parts of the automotive value chain. AI is being used in the designing, manufacturing, production and post-production process.

Every facet of this industry is being benefited by this transformative technology. Furthermore, the most debated aspect of AI i.e its use in ‘driver assistance’ is quickly gaining momentum in different parts of the world – with Tesla inarguably being one of the modern pioneers of this aspect of AI.

Level 1 and Level 2 autonomous vehicles along with parking assistance and cruise control are gaining popularity for their use of AIs. If the current pace is maintained, within the upcoming 8-10 years, AI technology would be present in a majority of automotive applications and by the end of 2030, it is expected that 95-98% of new vehicles would have AI to some extent[1].  Autonomous vehicles are those that use artificial intelligence in some or all areas of functioning.

Level 1 vehicles include driver assistance, Level 2 includes partial automated driving, Level 3 incorporates conditional automated driving while level 4 & 5 cars have high/full automated driving. In light of such developments, it is not in the realm of the impossible that in the coming years, vehicles may be known by their software providers as opposed to being known by their hardware manufacturers. Many popular software based companies such as Google, Amazon, Uber have stepped into the realm of autonomous vehicles. One can look forward to observe the fascinating solutions that AIs could introduce to traditional problems which could even transform the functioning of the entire automotive sector.
