Benedetto Vigna is an Italian physicist, technology leader, and business executive who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Ferrari. He has led Ferrari since September 2021, bringing a strong technology and innovation background to one of the world’s most iconic luxury automotive and performance brands.
Born on 10 April 1969 in Potenza, Italy, Benedetto Vigna grew up in Pietrapertosa and graduated with honours in Physics from the University of Pisa in 1993. Early in his career, he gained research experience at institutions including CERN in Geneva, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, and the Max Planck Institute in Munich.
In 1995, Benedetto Vigna joined STMicroelectronics, where he established and led the company’s activities in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). His work in semiconductor and sensor technology became particularly influential in automotive applications. His team developed a three-axis accelerometer, a technology that was initially used in automotive airbags and was later adapted for applications including the Nintendo Wii controller and smartphone screen rotation.
Over the course of his technology career, Benedetto Vigna registered more than 200 patents and gained international recognition for his contribution to MEMS innovation. In 2015, he received the IEEE Frederik Philips Award for leadership in the conception, development, and commercialization of microelectromechanical systems.
Ferrari appointed Benedetto Vigna as its Chief Executive Officer in June 2021, with his tenure beginning in September of that year. His appointment brought a technology-focused perspective to Ferrari at a time when the automotive industry was undergoing rapid transformation through electrification, software, connectivity, and advanced technologies.
