Use of AIs in the Automobile Industry

Use of AIs in the Automobile Industry

S.S Rana & Co.  8 min read

Artificial intelligence has been consistently transforming various industries across the world. However, the Automobile Industry is one, which has arguably seen the most developments in its processes and practice, due to development in AI. AI, for quite some time now, is being applied in different parts of the automotive value chain. AI is being used in the designing, manufacturing, production and post-production process.

Every facet of this industry is being benefited by this transformative technology. Furthermore, the most debated aspect of AI i.e its use in ‘driver assistance’ is quickly gaining momentum in different parts of the world – with Tesla inarguably being one of the modern pioneers of this aspect of AI.

Level 1 and Level 2 autonomous vehicles along with parking assistance and cruise control are gaining popularity for their use of AIs. If the current pace is maintained, within the upcoming 8-10 years, AI technology would be present in a majority of automotive applications and by the end of 2030, it is expected that 95-98% of new vehicles would have AI to some extent[1].  Autonomous vehicles are those that use artificial intelligence in some or all areas of functioning.

Level 1 vehicles include driver assistance, Level 2 includes partial automated driving, Level 3 incorporates conditional automated driving while level 4 & 5 cars have high/full automated driving. In light of such developments, it is not in the realm of the impossible that in the coming years, vehicles may be known by their software providers as opposed to being known by their hardware manufacturers. Many popular software based companies such as Google, Amazon, Uber have stepped into the realm of autonomous vehicles. One can look forward to observe the fascinating solutions that AIs could introduce to traditional problems which could even transform the functioning of the entire automotive sector.

July 2021 Car Sales – Snapshot

Around 2,94,330 passenger cars were sold in the Indian market for July 2021. The sales shot up by 48.9 percent YoY and 15.2 percent MoM. The OEMs were able to streamline supply before the festive season and the dispatches have happened accordingly.

After the second wave of covid and lockdown across the country, there was a pent-up demand for passenger vehicles. The dealership stock levels were also low as many OEMs had plant maintenance shutdowns in parts of May’21. The production was ramped up significantly in July 2021 to serve the pent-up requirement and also prepare for the upcoming festivities. August marks the beginning of the festive season with Onam (biggest festival in Kerala) and Varamahakshmi (celebrated in parts of South India). The festivities will continue with Ganesha Chaturthi in Sep’21 and so on. This has led to adequate stocking levels across the channel.

The Calendar Year 2021 had been entered with optimism, to say the least. We all would like to believe, be it personally or for the automobile sector, the worst is behind us. however, we still have a few challenges up our sleeves and should we fight together, we shall overcome this as well.

Coming to the auto industry, the year 2021 by default will be a big volume year. We have had more than 48 days of lockdown last year, so should we work by the normal, we shall deliver a handsome growth over last year. So, for the year till date analysis, all of us would see handsome growth volumes because of the simple reason, last year April our wholesale of the entire auto industry was at Zero. Two Wheeler retails in May 2021 fell by almost 110% when compared to April 2021. The second wave of COVID-19 across India has been detrimental for the two-wheeler industry. While the two-wheeler market was among the first segments to grow in a post-COVID revival last year, the decline in sales this year is even more worrisome as the rural markets have been impacted as well.

May 2021 sales cannot be compared on a year-on-year basis as there was not much movement in the auto industry, hence we have compared the statistics with April 2021.

The Indian Auto Industry in total registered a production volume of about 8,06,755 units for the month of May 2021, this was a massive rise of over 4,67,267 over last year May 2020. Of course, one would attribute this to the low base of last year May 2020, due to the lockdowns and pandemic situation.

Nevertheless, we experienced growth in both Exports and Domestic sales. The exports grew by 3,06,378 units. and the Domestic sales grew by 1,26,348 units. Clearly, OEM’s placed their bets on exports in the month of May, rather than the domestic market which was mostly closed.

This Year till Date 2021: Top 10 Cars in Growth. Hyundai Creta, Kia Sonet, Maruit Swift, Tata Nexon

The Indian car Industry saw a decent run from January 2021 up to May 2021. However, the last month of May did throw the production out of gear and we experienced a dip in production last month. Despite the consistent lockdowns and halt in production, we are poised to grow this calendar year over 2020, and grow handsomely. June will see a strong comeback since the production has started at almost all OEMs. Another point to note is, the growth figures this year will seem high for the obvious reason that last year we had zero production in the month of April 2020, which means we are a full month ahead of last year.

Growth is an important Parameter, which shows how the product has got its appeal in the market. While it may not be very relevant for cars that have long established themselves and have a higher base over Last Year, it is still very relevant for all of us to look at which car has got a higher acceptance from the customers over the last year.
