Global Chip Shortage for Auto Makers | Intentional or Incidental ?

Global Chip Shortage for Auto Makers | Intentional or Incidental ?

By WAF Editorial Team

•Can we blame Covid for this too ?

•How can all the Auto Makers be affected simultaneously across the world ?

•Is it just Poor Planning, Poor Demand or something else ?

Yes! Most Auto makers are obsessed with Lean Manufacturing. Most got extremely conservative last year with their Production schedules as demand gradually rebounded. Excessive WFH, Gaming, Smartphones led to a surge in demand for chips from other product segments.

The Trump Administration had blacklisted the Chinese Semiconductor manufacturers last year. The Taiwanese Chip Makers, the largest across the world had raised a caveat against oversupply. The automotive grade chips were seeing rapid upgradation. Getting stuck with outdated chipsets inventory could be the greatest nightmare for any chip maker.

All said and done, auto makers facing ongoing or impending shutdowns simultaneously across the world can’t be just due to the aforesaid reasons. It can’t even be due to Covid.

There could be more than what meets the eye. Is it a perfectly orchestrated cartelised action by chip makers to pull the plug ?

In the new age vehicles, the electronic parts and components constitute around 40% of all components. One might find around 3K chips in just one car across the powertrain, windows, lights, ADAS and more.  If even one chip is missing, the car can’t leave the assembly line!

Anuj Guglani, CEO, World Auto Forum says, ‘The Automotive chips compared to their siblings in an Xbox, a Mac or an iPhone have to be much more robust & durable. They should be able to stand high temperatures. They need to endure for long. Their development cycles are longer and more expensive.

So where do you think any chip maker who runs it as a business, would shift focus during the pandemic ?

Obviously to an Xbox, a Mac and an iPhone as their demand went through the roof while auto co’s were forced to cut orders, inventories and margins!”

Industry Outlook 2021 : Overall Seems Positive

Industry Outlook 2021 : Overall Seems Positive

by WAF Editorial Team

Yes we had last few months of stellar wholesale and retails as…

The dealers inventories were near zero when lockdown eased

There was a pent up demand

People shunned public transport and embraced personal mobility

2 wheeler and Pre Owners cars demand went through the roof due to price sensitivity.

What is the Outlook for 2021 ?

The Sensex might be breaching 47K levels but situation at ground level is not that encouraging.

The Auto Industry was just recovering from the BS-6 , Poor Demand in 2019 and 2018 and it got struck by Covid19. The Market has surely opened up but demand is still not consistent.

Manufacturing facilities continue to suffer from covid related closures. Manpower outages are still not that uncommon. Supplies get stuck due to covid or agitations.

Industrial Output, earnings are still down. The new strain from UK is also bad news. This seems the time to just stay healthy and protected, ensure family is safe ; Surviving seems to be the new thriving!

So Quoting figures …

What can be more irresponsible and Loss- Loss than Drunk Driving . You endanger your own life and also of the innocent fellow commuter on the road. What if 1 Lakh Connected Vehicles get hacked in a city simultaneously? We don’t even have a law on it as yet!

What if 1 Lakh Connected Vehicles get hacked in a city simultaneously? We don’t even have a law on it as yet!

By Anuj Guglani CEO , World Auto Forum

Yes! this can be a sad reality, if we don’t know do something about it Now!

World Auto Forum getting all the Stakeholders viz Govts, Industry Chambers & Associations, IT Cos, Auto Cos, Telcos Together to Act on it

The Time to “Act” is “Now”!

20 Years back, one would read the news of just computers getting hacked. If back in 1990 someone had said, your car, or your fridge can be hacked. People would have laughed their guts out!  Well now computers run everything! And they are connected, so in short, anything can get hacked!

Whether its Power Grids, Transportation, Buildings, Public Infrastructures…list goes on..

IOT – Internet of Things or IOE – Internet of Everything are Great concepts. They are getting Big Push from the Govts, Enthusiastic IT Cos & Telcos! Well, all this is Nice!

But the problem lies in the fact that the “Design Genesis” of most Non IT Assets lies not in the present decade but in the last three or four decades. So by design our cars, fridges were not supposed to be IoT and IoE Enabled.

So, When you do make them IoT enabled now, the basic design doesn’t guarantee Security unless the accessing networks are super secure!

Most Car Service Aggregators offering an Uber, Customers need an Oyo!

Most Car Service Aggregators offering an Uber, Customers need an Oyo!

by Anuj Guglani, CEO World Auto Forum

Whats’s with Uber that works fab while hailing a Cab but goes miserably wrong when applied to a Car Service Centre. Well here it is..

Its been ages I went to a workshop to get my car serviced. Its always been picked and dropped. So instead of me visiting the Workshop, the latter would visit me each time!

I have taken my car mostly to the Authorised OEM Workshop. Now that the car got a bit old and thus out of warranty, I thought of experimenting these new age Car Service App based Aggregators.

So more for the Experience, I reached out to one of the app Co’s.

What follow s is nothing against the company or the workshop. On the contrary the app and their staff put in great effort in ensuring a good experience. But the entire model seems to be designed to create confusion and trauma. Here’s why ..

Key Difference between Uber and Car Service Aggregators

Vision 2030 : The Future of Auto Retail

Your Automotive Business depends on just 3 Things :

3. Your Digital Strategy & FootPrint

by Anuj Guglani, CEO World Auto Forum

“I’m so sorry Ma’am”, cried the Fuel station Attendant. “I have accidentally fuelled your Diesel Car with Petrol!”

This happened with my Wife last month during a routine visit at the “Petrol Pump”. Seems the guy took it literally! She immediately called me. The first thing I asked her, “How much Petrol went in?” Thankfully the petrol fed, was just a litre. Not much of a worry. I asked her to wait for a while and get the vehicle tanked up with diesel. It was all fine.

However it wasn’t this easy. I too was a bit taken aback and wanted professional help & ratification of my actions. I called up the dealership. Noone picked up. Then I remembered I had the CRE no saved from last service reminder. We all know how many service reminder calls we get! The calls continue even after we have sold the car! The CRE took the call in first ring. I shared the incident. She was shocked and wanted to help.

I could sense she was running around her office, looking for the right person to guide me. She said, “Sir I shall make you speak to my manager.” thereafter I heard a middle aged male’s voice, sounding very busy. “Bataye, kya Hua?” he asked. I narrated the incident. He snubbed me mid way, asking, “Apko mera no kisne diya? Yeh mera kaam nahin hai!”

I didnt feel like wasting my breath in explaining that your CRE thought you are capable to help the customer, sadly you aren’t. I thought I shouldn’t waste time in saying,”You don’t even realise you are saying all these things to a customer in distress, who pays for your bills, Your kids school fees, your parents medicines, your movie tickets and your vacations. And that, this call wasn’t transferred. The CRE handed over her handphone to you to speak. Probably you just rattled out a standard line, which you say to most customers who need your help!
